Hut 8 Corp. (Nasdaq: HUT) stated it welcomes a directive issued by Texas Governor Greg Abbott to the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas regarding data center development standards, according to a company press release.
The company said the directive's principles are consistent with its existing development model. Hut 8 currently holds approximately 1.5 gigawatts of utility capacity across operational and development sites in Texas, including behind-the-meter projects at King Mountain and Vega.
The company highlighted its Beacon Point AI data center campus, under development in Nueces County, Texas, as an example of its approach. The company said Beacon Point will use battery systems to mitigate voltage impacts on the Texas grid and a closed-loop cooling system filled with water sourced from outside Nueces County.
Hut 8 said it participated in the PUCT's voluntary data center survey prior to the governor's directive and intends to continue cooperating with the PUCT and ERCOT during their review.
CEO Asher Genoot said: "Responsible growth requires developers to think beyond the data center to the grid that powers their projects, the local resources around them, and the communities that host them. That perspective has shaped how Hut 8 has built and operated in Texas since 2022."
Community officials from Nueces County, Calallen Independent School District, Del Mar College, and the Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Corporation each issued statements describing engagement with the company during the Beacon Point development process.
