MicroVision launches lidar sensor line for drone and defense markets

MicroVision, Inc. (NASDAQ: MVIS) announced the launch of its Movia Air product family, a line of lidar sensors designed for unmanned aerial vehicles and autonomous aerial systems, according to a company press release.

The portfolio consists of two products: Movia Air, a lightweight lidar sensor, and Movia Air Plus, which adds edge processing and optional video imaging to the base sensor. Movia Air supports autonomous landing, obstacle avoidance, and object tracking. Movia Air Plus extends those capabilities with real-time 3D mapping, sensor fusion, and simultaneous localization and mapping navigation.

MicroVision said the Movia Air sensor weighs approximately 50% less than its standard industrial Movia platform while maintaining the same sensing performance. The company said the reduced weight allows integration into UAVs without reducing payload capacity or flight duration.

The company said several unnamed partners, including a major industrial drone delivery company and a provider of resource exploration services, are currently evaluating the Movia Air product family.

MicroVision plans to demonstrate Movia Air Plus at the Joint Interagency Field Experimentation event, a Navy-led program that tests emerging technologies alongside military operators, evaluators, and acquisition stakeholders.

A product webinar is scheduled for the week of August 17, covering technical capabilities, integration options, and target applications for both products.

Target applications listed by the company include defense reconnaissance, infrastructure inspection, emergency response, autonomous package delivery, precision agriculture, and industrial drone operations.
