Spire Global wins $3M NOAA contract extension for weather data

Spire Global, Inc. (NYSE: SPIR) has been awarded a $3 million, six-month contract extension by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to continue evaluating data from its Hyperspectral Microwave Sounder (HyMS) technology.

The contract extends work begun earlier in 2026, when Spire delivered initial HyMS observations following the demonstrator mission's launch in January 2026. The extension will allow NOAA to assess sensor performance across a broader range of atmospheric conditions and seasonal weather patterns, as well as evaluate the data's impact on forecast accuracy and atmospheric profiling.

The award also includes an unfunded three-month option valued at $2 million.

HyMS captures atmospheric observations across more than 2,000 sensing channels spanning temperature and water vapor bands, enabling high-vertical-resolution atmospheric profiling. The technology is also designed to offer resilience to radio frequency interference, including spectrum congestion, jamming, and spoofing.

"The first phase demonstrated that HyMS can successfully collect high-quality hyperspectral microwave observations from orbit," said Mohammad Belal, Program Director of Microwave Technologies at Spire Global. "This extension allows us to evaluate those observations across a much broader range of atmospheric conditions and seasons."

Spire said HyMS observations are intended to complement its existing Radio Occultation and GNSS-R data products. The company is based in Vienna, Va., and operates a satellite constellation using radio frequency technology.
