Iran proposes traffic plan to reopen Hormuz that gives it greater control

Investing.com -- Iran has offered Oman a temporary plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz that would route traffic through Iranian waters, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said on Tuesday.

Under the proposal, one direction of traffic would pass through Iranian waters, while part of the opposite route would also travel through Iranian-controlled areas, Gharibabadi told state television.

Iran turned down an Omani proposal that would have divided transit routes equally between the two countries. Gharibabadi said that plan failed to address Tehran's security concerns without long-term regional stability.

The strait will stay closed if Muscat rejects Iran's proposal, Gharibabadi said. He added that Tehran has never recognized the southern route along Oman's coast.
