Nolan's The Odyssey earns $140M in IMAX global box office

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, distributed by Universal Pictures, generated $48 million in global IMAX box office during its second weekend, which IMAX Corporation (NYSE: IMAX) described as the highest-grossing second weekend in IMAX history. The figure represents an 8% decline from the film's $52 million opening weekend.

Cumulative IMAX global box office for the film reached $140 million, accounting for 21.9% of its total global box office. The film crossed $100 million in IMAX revenue in 10 days, making it the second-fastest film in IMAX history to reach that threshold.

In North America, the film earned $24 million from 443 IMAX screens, a 19% drop from its opening weekend, representing a 27.7% domestic market share. Internationally, the film also earned $24 million across 450 screens, up 7% from its opening weekend, with a 19% market share. The international weekend was described as the biggest IMAX weekend ever across the EMEA region.

IMAX 70mm Film screenings, available at 41 locations worldwide, generated $5.2 million over the weekend, averaging $126,000 per screen. Cumulative IMAX 70mm box office stands at $16.9 million, averaging $412,000 per screen and representing 12.1% of the film's total IMAX global box office. Additional showtimes are sold out into September.

The Odyssey is the first theatrical release shot entirely with IMAX Film Cameras, according to the company. Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot 2.1 million feet of IMAX film. Each IMAX 70mm print is approximately 11 miles long and weighs roughly 600 pounds.

The film has upcoming IMAX releases in South Korea on August 5, China on August 14, and Japan on September 11. IMAX operates 1,876 systems across 91 countries and territories as of June 30, 2026.
