AMC Theatres (NYSE: AMC) said The Odyssey set a new record for IMAX revenue at AMC locations through the first two weekends of a single film's release, covering July 16 through July 26.
The film opened to approximately $124.5 million domestically in its first weekend. In its second weekend, it generated a reported $87 million domestically. Through July 26, the film had earned approximately $286 million in North America and approximately $640 million worldwide.
AMC operates approximately half of all IMAX screens in the United States and more IMAX locations than any other exhibitor in North America. The company attributed a significant share of ticket sales to IMAX screenings.
Demand for IMAX 70mm showings was particularly strong. AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York ran IMAX 70mm showtimes around the clock from Friday through Sunday for the second consecutive weekend. AMC said many IMAX 70mm showtimes are sold out through mid-August.
AMC said it is working with Universal Pictures and IMAX to add additional IMAX 70mm showtimes where possible.
AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron said, "We at AMC have long believed that our investing in premium large format experiences will be welcomed and valued by moviegoers. Today, AMC operates more IMAX locations than any other exhibitor in North America, and our guests are rewarding that commitment in record numbers."
The Odyssey was shot entirely using IMAX cameras, according to the company's statement.
