cbdMD backs bipartisan hemp regulation bill ahead of November deadline

July 24, 2026 1:43 PM EDT

cbdMD, Inc. (NYSE American: YCBD) announced its support for the Lawful Hemp Protection Act, a bipartisan bill introduced July 21 by Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY) and Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) that would establish a federal regulatory framework for hemp-derived products.

The legislation comes ahead of a November 12, 2026 deadline set by Section 781 of the Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations law, under which the federal definition of hemp is scheduled to narrow. Without congressional action, many full-spectrum CBD and hemp wellness products could be removed from the marketplace, according to the company's statement.

The bill would repeal that provision and replace it with a framework placing hemp-derived products under FDA oversight. Proposed requirements include mandatory third-party testing, transparent labeling, a 21-and-over age restriction, domestic sourcing standards, and restrictions on synthetic and artificially modified cannabinoids.

cbdMD also expressed support for the Office of Management and Budget's call for Congress to update the hemp definition through the federal funding process before the November deadline.

"Responsible companies have long supported clear federal standards that protect consumers, promote product quality, and distinguish compliant hemp products from illicit synthetic intoxicants," said Ronan Kennedy, Chief Executive Officer of cbdMD. "We encourage Congress to act before the November implementation deadline."

cbdMD is a Charlotte, North Carolina-based company whose brands include cbdMD, Bluebird Botanicals, Paw CBD, and ATRx Labs.
