Spire Global joins ESA-backed AI satellite health monitoring program

Spire Global, Inc. (NYSE: SPIR) has announced a partnership with SATE to develop an artificial intelligence system for satellite health monitoring through an 18-month research and development program called STRAIDE, funded via subscriptions to the European Space Agency (ESA) by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the UK Space Agency (UKSA).

The program aims to enable real-time onboard diagnostics, anomaly detection, and predictive failure analysis across satellite constellations. SATE will contribute its AI-based diagnostic system, called CLUE, which is designed to monitor satellite health indicators, detect early warning signals, diagnose anomalies, and estimate time-to-failure for critical components. The system is designed to function both onboard satellites and on the ground.

Spire will provide its satellite platform, onboard processing capabilities, operational flight data, and a ground-based hardware replica of its satellite systems for use in the program.

"As Spire's satellite constellation grows in scale, the operational complexity of managing each asset demands a fundamentally different approach," said John E Ward, Spire's Senior Director of Research and Development. "STRAIDE brings artificial intelligence on-board for satellite autonomy – detecting anomalies earlier, anticipating failures before they occur, and freeing operators to oversee larger fleets with greater confidence."

The program's stated goals include earlier detection of in-orbit issues, reduced operational downtime, and extended satellite lifespan through predictive maintenance. Spire said it has deployed satellites with onboard processing capabilities since 2022.

The partners plan to complete a validated end-to-end demonstration of the system over the course of the 18-month program, according to a press release from the company.
