Intel mulls partnership for Ohio chip fab, SK Hynix among candidates - report

Investing.com -- Intel is seeking a partner to help operate its Ohio semiconductor manufacturing facility, according to a Semafor report published Wednesday. The chipmaker is considering various companies to assist with the project rather than selling it outright.

South Korean memory manufacturer SK Hynix is among the companies being evaluated for a potential partnership with Intel on the Ohio operation, the report said. The two companies have not entered formal negotiations about an operating agreement. The talks are said to be in very early stages.

SK Hynix on Tuesday denied a South Korean media report claiming it was negotiating to acquire the Ohio semiconductor campus. The company does not plan to purchase the facility, according to the report.

Intel shares rose 1% in after-hours trading on Wednesday, while SK Hynix traded approximately 3.2% higher.

The chipmaker has been forming agreements with competitors and customers since the US government took a strategic stake in the company last year. Intel shares have risen 161% over the past year as the company works with the Trump administration to expand chipmaking capacity in the United States.

Intel broke ground on the Ohio campus in 2022 and announced plans to invest $28 billion in the site. The company missed its 2025 target to open the facility and, following a series of layoffs, pushed back the opening date to 2030. The Ohio site represents Intel's first new chip-manufacturing plant in four decades.
