HPE selected for R&D projects in U.S. DOE Genesis Mission

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE: HPE) has been selected to participate in multiple research and development projects in the first phase of the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission, an initiative aimed at building an integrated science discovery platform combining AI, supercomputing, quantum systems, and scientific instruments.

HPE said it has been invited to contribute to six projects covering AI model application, networking, cybersecurity, performance optimization, and water availability forecasting. The projects include developing an agentic AI system for fusion energy experiments, an AI-driven cybersecurity framework called Spotter-AI, a science-aware AI operations platform called SciNet, and research into generative AI techniques for U.S. water supply forecasting.

In addition to the R&D projects, HPE said it will deliver integrated AI systems as part of the Genesis Mission, including a system called "Lux," which the company described as expected to be the first dedicated AI system for science supporting the mission. HPE said Lux will be developed in collaboration with AMD and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

"We have a deep, decades-long R&D partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy and its national laboratories that has ushered in world-leading innovation in scientific computing," said Andrew Wheeler, deputy CTO, senior vice president and director of HPE Labs.

The Genesis Mission is led by the Department of Energy and involves government, industry, academia, and philanthropy. The primary goal of the first phase is to identify pathways toward scientific capabilities and establish a foundation for future investment.
