Instructure unveils AI study coach tied to Canvas course content
Instructure announced Project Athena, an AI-powered study tool under development that integrates with its Canvas learning management system to generate personalized quizzes, study guides and coaching prompts based on each student's course materials.
The tool is the first project launched through Instructure Foundry, a venture unit the company describes as focused on building products outside its core development roadmap. Project Athena accesses course materials, assignments and upcoming assessments through a student's existing Canvas account permissions via a read-only connection.
According to Instructure, student conversations will not be used to train external AI models, and students will retain ownership of data they create within the tool. The company states it serves as a FERPA-designated school official when handling education records for participating institutions.
Hinds Community College in Mississippi, which the press release identifies as the largest community college in the state with approximately 7,000 students, conducted a pilot of the tool in spring and plans to offer it to all students in the fall semester.
"Office hours and a tutoring center can only stretch so far. We wanted every student to have support whenever they needed it," said Brandon Mitchell, Director of Instructional Design and Technology at Hinds College.
Shiren Vijiasingam, chief product officer at Instructure, said the tool is "being designed around student data privacy and responsible use" and is intended to "coach toward mastery, not answers."
CEO Steve Daly said the company has spent more than a year developing the product alongside customers and will continue testing and refining it before a broader launch.
Project Athena is currently in development, and a general release date was not specified in the announcement.
