Nano Nuclear and Fortil reach design milestone for KRONOS reactor system

Nano Nuclear Energy Inc. (NASDAQ: NNE) announced it has reached a conceptual design milestone in its engineering collaboration with Fortil, a France-based engineering and consulting firm, for the Fuel Handling & Storage System of the KRONOS MMR™ Energy System.

The Fuel Handling & Storage System is a subsystem of the KRONOS MMR™ architecture, supporting the handling, storage, and management of nuclear fuel during reactor operations. Fortil's nuclear engineering team is responsible for the multidisciplinary design of the subsystem, covering mechanical engineering, systems engineering, nuclear safety, instrumentation and control, and radiation protection.

According to a press release from the company, conceptual design activities are near conclusion. This phase established the technical basis for the subsystem by evaluating engineering solutions against program requirements, defining key subsystem interfaces, and producing engineering documentation to guide subsequent development. The two companies expect to commence preliminary design activities as a next step.

The engineering milestone follows regulatory progress earlier in 2026, when the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission formally accepted a Construction Permit Application for deployment of the KRONOS MMR™ at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and initiated formal review activities. Nano Nuclear stated it believes the current review schedule provides an opportunity to begin initial construction activities during the second half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals.

James Walker, Chief Executive Officer of Nano Nuclear Energy, said: "As this critical subsystem progresses from conceptual design into preliminary design, we continue to mature the reactor architecture, systematically reduce technical risk and build the engineering basis necessary to support future licensing, construction and commercialization."

Nano Nuclear also stated it believes the KRONOS MMR™ is the first commercially-ready microreactor program to reach this stage of the U.S. NRC licensing process, though this was presented as a company claim.
