Lakewood-Amedex shares resistance data for antibiotic candidate Nu-3
Lakewood-Amedex Biotherapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: LABT) announced resistance data for its drug candidate Nu-3, a Phase 2-ready compound targeting infected diabetic foot ulcers (iDFU), according to a company press release.
The announcement follows the 27th Public Meeting of the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria (PACCARB), held on June 16, 2026, which focused on the next five-year National Action Plan on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria.
Nu-3 is described by the company as working through a physical mechanism that disrupts bacterial membranes. In laboratory testing, Nu-3 did not induce resistance in a serial passage experiment. The compound also demonstrated in vitro activity against bacteria carrying a range of resistance mechanisms, including antibiotic target mutations, direct antibiotic metabolism, and efflux pump mechanisms.
Specific resistance variants against which Nu-3 showed activity include vanA and vanB variants in E. faecalis and E. faecium, NDM, ESBL, AmpC, and CRE beta-lactamase variants across multiple bacterial species including E. coli, K. pneumoniae, and P. aeruginosa, and efflux pump variants in S. epidermis and S. marascens.
"Nu-3 directly aligns with the objectives outlined by PACCARB, by targeting and disrupting bacterial membranes through a unique, physical mechanism of action," said Kelvin Cooper, Ph.D., CEO of Lakewood-Amedex Biotherapeutics.
Nu-3 belongs to the company's Bisphosphocin® class of antimicrobials, which is also being developed to address bacterial strains including MRSA and VRE.
