Nano Nuclear nears conceptual design finish for KRONOS fuel system

Nano Nuclear Energy Inc. (NASDAQ: NNE) announced July 22 that its engineering collaboration with French firm Fortil on the Fuel Handling & Storage System for the KRONOS MMR™ Energy System has reached a conceptual design milestone.

The two companies said conceptual design activities are near conclusion, establishing the technical basis for the subsystem by evaluating engineering solutions against program requirements, defining key subsystem interfaces, and producing engineering documentation to guide subsequent development. The companies plan to commence preliminary design activities as the next step.

The Fuel Handling & Storage System supports the safe handling, storage, and management of nuclear fuel throughout reactor operations. Fortil's nuclear engineering team is responsible for multidisciplinary design work spanning mechanical engineering, systems engineering, nuclear safety, instrumentation and control, and radiation protection.

James Walker, Chief Executive Officer of Nano Nuclear Energy, said: "As this critical subsystem progresses from conceptual design into preliminary design, we continue to mature the reactor architecture, systematically reduce technical risk and build the engineering basis necessary to support future licensing, construction and commercialization."

The announcement follows regulatory developments earlier this year in which the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission formally accepted the Construction Permit Application for deployment of the KRONOS MMR™ at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and initiated formal review activities. Nano Nuclear stated it believes the current review schedule provides the opportunity to begin initial construction activities during the second half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other project requirements.

The company also claims the KRONOS MMR™ is the first commercially ready microreactor program to reach this stage of the NRC licensing process, though that characterization was made by the company itself and has not been independently verified.

Fortil is headquartered in Ollioules, France, and employs approximately 2,500 people across France, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and North America.
