Ken's Foods adopts Rockwell Automation on-machine system for palletizing

July 22, 2026 7:01 AM EDT

Ken's Foods has implemented an on-machine automation architecture using Rockwell Automation (NYSE: ROK) PowerFlex 350 variable frequency drives across its end-of-line palletizing and conveyor operations, according to a press release from Rockwell Automation.

The food and beverage producer replaced legacy cabinet-based automation with drives mounted directly on production equipment, reducing cabling, eliminating large control panels and providing real-time access to current, voltage and speed data.

Kyle Richard, vice president of business development at Elm Electrical, an electrical partner of Ken's Foods, said the approach generated measurable cost reductions. "We estimate an overall cost savings of 17% compared to designing, building centralized panels and wiring directly to local motor disconnects, I/O points and motors," Richard said. "The on-machine VFDs also support a scalable safety system across a 130-drive palletizing line."

Tony Stolo, project engineer at Ken's Foods, said the system reduces space requirements, speeds installation and simplifies maintenance. "It also gives us flexibility to expand or reconfigure as our operations evolve," Stolo said.

The on-machine architecture also supports local lockout/tagout procedures, allowing technicians to isolate equipment without shutting down entire production lines. Ken's Foods has designated the approach as its standard for future pallet-conveying systems.

Ken's Foods is a family-owned company producing dressings, sauces and marinades, with plant operations in Massachusetts, Georgia, Nevada and Indiana and more than 1,600 employees.
