Michigan reports 6,571 cyclosporiasis cases in ongoing outbreak

Investing.com -- Michigan health officials reported 6,571 cases of cyclosporiasis on Tuesday, marking an increase of 423 cases from Monday's count. The state health department said 102 people have been hospitalized in connection with the outbreak, with no deaths recorded.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora parasite. The infection spreads through consumption of food, typically raw fruits and vegetables, or water contaminated with feces, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea and other gastrointestinal issues.

Cases of the infection have increased steadily in recent months across the United States, according to the CDC. The agency reported on July 13 that 1,645 people across 34 states had contracted the parasite, with 141 hospitalizations. The CDC said at that time more than 5,100 additional cases required further analysis and confirmation.

The Food and Drug Administration said Monday its basis for linking Taylor Farms' central Mexico lettuce to the outbreak remained unchanged. The agency cited traceback and epidemiological evidence, noting that a Cyclospora-positive border-surveillance sample was later determined to be a false positive.
