Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (NASDAQ: KTOS) has been awarded a sole-source, single-award Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity contract valued at approximately $156 million by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration Office of Secure Transportation, according to a company statement.
The contract, designated Project Solar Shield, calls for Kratos to provide mobile Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System platforms for the Office of Secure Transportation, which is responsible for the ground and air transport of nuclear weapons, weapon components, and special nuclear materials.
The platforms are designed to detect, track, identify, and respond to potentially hostile unmanned aircraft systems in real time. The contract covers mobile C-UAS capability intended to operate wherever Office of Secure Transportation missions occur across the continental United States, rather than at fixed locations.
Dave Carter, President of Kratos' Defense & Rocket Support Services Division, described the award as "the first large scale government production contract of its kind built around this integrated approach," combining C-UAS, mobile platform design, command-and-control capabilities, and power management into a single system.
Kratos said work will be performed at secure company facilities and is expected to begin immediately. The company stated that no additional information would be provided due to security-related considerations.
