US imposes 50% tariffs on wide range of Canadian products
Investing.com -- The United States imposed a 50% tariff on numerous Canadian products on Monday after President Donald Trump signed three proclamations under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930. The White House said the action responds to Canada's treatment of American cars, alcohol, and dairy products.
The tariffs cover products including wine, hockey sticks, and cement. The measures will take effect 30 days after signing and apply to covered goods regardless of whether they originate under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
Energy, potash, products already subject to Section 232 tariffs, fish, and critical minerals are exempt from the new tariffs.
The White House said Canada imposes tariffs and quotas on cars imported from the U.S. but not on imports from other countries, adding that from April 2025 through March 2026, Canadian imports of U.S. motor vehicles decreased by about 22%, or $5.6 billion, compared to the same period in 2024-2025.
Most Canadian provinces and territories stopped purchasing, distributing, or retailing U.S. alcoholic beverages without imposing similar restrictions on other countries, according to the White House. From March 2025 through February 2026, Canadian imports of U.S. alcoholic beverages fell by about 81%, or $582 million, compared to the same period in 2024-2025, the order said.
The White House also cited Canada's tariff-rate quotas on U.S. cheese as more restrictive than those imposed on similar imports from the EU.
The United States will not renew the USMCA in its current form, the statement added.
