SunPower finishes 977-kilowatt solar project in Palm Desert

SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR) announced the completion of a 977-kilowatt solar system at the Millenium Project, a 330-unit residential community in Palm Desert, California, according to a press release from the company.

The system is projected to generate over 1.6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually and is backed by a 30-year service commitment. The project was developed in partnership with PearlX, the community's owner, under what PearlX describes as its "Energy Estate" model.

SunPower received a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 90 from the Millenium project. CEO T.J. Rodgers noted that the score does not reflect the company's overall NPS standing. "To be fully candid, a very high NPS score on even a big, sophisticated project does not accurately reflect SunPower's overall NPS, which was -25% in Q2'25 when we acquired old-SunPower after its bankruptcy had shut down literally hundreds of projects," Rodgers said.

Rodgers said the company has improved its NPS each quarter since that point and has set a target of 70% by the second quarter of 2027. He referenced Cypress Semiconductor, his previous company, as having reached that benchmark after four years.

Guy Winters, President of PearlX, said the Millenium installation reflects the returns the Energy Estate model is designed to deliver for property owners and residents, and indicated plans to expand the partnership with SunPower.

Rodgers cited data from EnergySage placing the average cost of a home solar system in California at $2.47 per watt, with an estimated payback period of 7.3 years through reduced utility bills. He also cited U.S. Energy Information Agency data indicating that only 15% of California homes where solar is financially viable have installed it, with the national figure at 7%.
