Loganair signed a term sheet with Beta Technologies (NYSE: BETA) to purchase five ALIA CTOL (CX300) all-electric aircraft, with options for five more, the companies announced at the Farnborough International Airshow.
The aircraft are expected to enter service in 2029, which the companies say would position Loganair as the first commercial airline in Europe operating an electric aircraft fleet.
The agreement follows a demonstration programme completed in March, during which Beta's CTOL aircraft flew 23 flights over 10 days across Loganair's Scottish network, covering more than 1,000 nautical miles and connecting Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness, Wick and Kirkwall.
Most of Loganair's regional routes are under 100 miles, which falls within the CX300's stated mission profile. The aircraft operates from existing runways and recharges in 20 to 40 minutes using Beta's fast-charging systems.
The deal includes plans for technical support and fleet integration. The aircraft are intended to support both passenger and cargo operations.
Loganair chief executive Luke Farajallah said the demonstration programme showed electric aviation is "a viable commercial opportunity" and cited the potential to reduce operating costs by up to 80%.
Beta Technologies founder and chief executive Kyle Clark said the agreement followed demonstrated performance across Loganair's network "on their routes, and in their conditions."
Beta Technologies is headquartered in South Burlington, Vermont, and Loganair is based in Glasgow, Scotland.
