Investing.com-- Domino’s Pizza is expected to post slightly stronger earnings on July 20, as the fast food chain benefited from increased demand thanks to the football world cup.
But the boost from the world cup is expected to be offset by broader weakness in U.S. demand and sales, as store traffic dithered this year amid more selective consumer spending.
DPZ is expected to post earnings per share of $4.16 on revenue of $1.18 billion for the three months to June 30, Investing.com data showed. That compares to EPS of $3.81 and revenue of $1.15 billion from a year ago.
The company’s earnings have missed estimates for the past two quarters, as it grapples with an increasingly negative operating environment.
Still, BTIG analysts said DPZ was likely to have benefited from the football worldcup, largely thanks to its delivery-heavy model. But they warned that the boost from the event was unlikely to be meaningful.
They noted that investor sentiment towards restaurants remained negative amid broader macroeconomic headwinds, increasingly health conscious customers, and the need for more aggressive discounting to attract customers.
Gordon Haskett analysts said they expect DPZ to miss EPS and same-store sales expectations, and that the company’s guidance was also likely to disappoint amid a challenging operating environment.
Still, they view DPZ’s shares as “materially oversold,” and said the company’s core earnings growth remained stable, as did its cash levels and its overall market share.
