Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) announced on July 15 that a group of Japanese companies intend to join its Cosmos Coalition, a program aimed at advancing open physical AI models for use in robotics, manufacturing and industrial settings.
The companies that intend to join include AIRoA, FANUC, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Kubota, NEC, SoftBank Corp., Sony Group Corporation and Yaskawa Electric, among others.
Nvidia also announced Cosmos 3 Edge, a 4-billion-parameter model designed to run on its Jetson edge computing platforms. The model is intended to enable on-device vision reasoning and robot action generation without relying on cloud connectivity. According to Nvidia, developers can adapt the model for specific robots or environments using the open Cosmos framework in approximately one day.
Fujitsu is exploring the development of a collaborative control platform for physical AI alongside FANUC, Yaskawa Electric and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, integrating Nvidia's physical AI stack across industrial sectors.
Several other Japanese companies are applying Nvidia's platforms to specific use cases. SoftBank Corp. is developing a physical AI platform built on Cosmos, Omniverse and Isaac Sim. Kawasaki Heavy Industries is applying Nvidia technologies across healthcare, shipbuilding, transportation, aerospace and energy. Kubota is exploring Cosmos-based tools for autonomous agriculture. Enactic is fine-tuning Nvidia's Isaac GR00T model for elder-care robots, and Telexistence is applying Isaac for retail automation.
Nvidia also announced new Metropolis libraries that the company says can help developers build video intelligence systems at least six times faster using coding agents.
"Japan invented modern manufacturing. Now, it has the opportunity to reinvent it for the age of intelligent industries," said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia.
The announcements were made at an event in Tokyo. Nvidia noted that many of the products and features described remain in various stages of development and will be offered on a when-and-if-available basis.
