Cloudflare launches Precursor bot detection tool for web sessions

Cloudflare, Inc. (NYSE: NET) has announced the general availability of Precursor, a bot management tool that monitors user behavior throughout an entire web session rather than at single checkpoint moments.

According to the company, automated bot traffic now accounts for roughly 57% of all web requests, surpassing human activity on the internet. Cloudflare said traditional defenses such as CAPTCHAs evaluate only a single point in time, leaving gaps that modern bots can exploit.

Precursor runs inside web browsers and collects behavioral signals including mouse movement, scrolling rhythm, typing cadence, clipboard activity, and page visibility duration. The tool logs aggregate patterns rather than specific user inputs — keyboard activity, for example, is recorded as timing rhythm rather than actual keystrokes.

The product is enabled with a single click and requires no changes to underlying code. Cloudflare said its servers analyze the telemetry data in real time and adjust a session's Bot Score continuously, meaning automated agents cannot reset their behavioral profile by refreshing a page.

"Traditional security checks look at a single moment in time, but modern bots have gotten smart enough to fake their way through the front door," said Dane Knecht, CTO of Cloudflare. "With Precursor, we're now eliminating that blindspot."

The announcement was made via a press release from the San Francisco-based company.
