Indian crew member missing after ship hit in Strait of Hormuz

Investing.com -- An Indian crew member remains missing after a Cyprus-flagged container ship was struck in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, according to Cyprus's Deputy Ministry of Shipping on Monday.

The vessel, named GFS Galaxy, was hit by an unidentified projectile while passing through the waterway early Sunday, Cypriot authorities said.

The crew abandoned ship using a lifeboat, and the Oman Navy rescued 23 crew members, Cyprus's Deputy Ministry of Shipping said.

The missing crew member holds the rank of third engineer, the ministry said.

"The vessel is currently under tow toward the nearest safe anchorage at the UAE port of Khor Fakkan. The towing team is actively conducting a search operation to locate the missing crew member," Cyprus's DMS told Reuters in a statement.

The U.S. military launched strikes against Iran after Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces attacked the Cyprus-flagged container ship.

Iran's IRGC navy said it struck and stopped a vessel that had "jeopardized maritime security by switching off its systems" after it, along with other vessels, attempted to transit through an unauthorised route despite warnings to correct its course.
