CME Group launches agriculture index tracking five farm sectors

July 9, 2026 9:01 AM EDT

CME Group (NASDAQ: CME) announced the launch of its Agriculture Index, a monthly price benchmark that aggregates futures prices across five agricultural sectors: Grains, Oilseeds, Livestock, Dairy, and Lumber.

The index is designed to track aggregate performance across the global farm economy, accounting for supply chain changes, industrial demand shifts, and consumer trends affecting commodity costs. Its methodology neutralizes price differences between futures contract delivery months and applies weightings across the different markets it covers.

"Agriculture doesn't move one commodity at a time — and neither should the benchmarks that track it," said John Ricci, Managing Director and Global Head of Agricultural Products at CME Group. "By aggregating futures prices across five sectors on a single platform, the CME Group Agriculture Index gives producers, traders and analysts a more complete read on the farm economy and where it's headed."

CME Group said the index complements the existing Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer, a monthly survey measuring sentiment among 400 agricultural producers.
