Halliburton and Eni deploy closed-loop rig automation in deepwater Indonesia

Halliburton (NYSE: HAL) announced the deployment of its LOGIX automation and remote operations system on a deepwater exploration well with Eni offshore Indonesia, marking what the company claims is the first use of this capability in the Asia Pacific region.

The operation integrated full rig automation with Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD), combining rig surface equipment, automated well placement, downhole hydraulics, and MPD controls into a single closed-loop automated system. Halliburton's LOGIX Orchestration service coordinated drilling and tripping execution in one workflow, removing the separation between drilling execution and pressure management.

"LOGIX Orchestration coordinates drilling decisions in real time for surface, subsurface, and downhole systems," said Jim Collins, vice president of Sperry Drilling at Halliburton. "When we integrate rig automation with MPD, we close a critical gap and give operators better control, consistency, and performance in complex wells."

According to the press release, the deployment improved efficiency by more than 15% and maintained well control in a narrow operating margin environment.

The operation involved Eni's deepwater offshore Indonesia assets and represents Halliburton's expansion of closed-loop automation deployment across multiple offshore operations.
