Bausch + Lomb Corporation (NYSE: BLCO) has announced the launch of Orphia, an AI-powered digital health platform aimed at reducing administrative tasks for eye care providers. The platform will operate under a newly created division called Digital Health Services.
The initial application of Orphia focuses on pre-surgery cataract patient education, helping patients understand their condition and treatment options before meeting with a surgeon. The company states the platform is brand agnostic and designed to serve all eye care providers regardless of products or devices used.
To develop the platform's conversational patient engagement capability, Bausch + Lomb has engaged Hippocratic AI, a voice AI company for healthcare that says its large language model was built on more than 200 million patient interactions and validated by more than 7,500 U.S.-licensed clinicians.
Bausch + Lomb Chairman and CEO Brent Saunders said, "Orphia was created to serve every eye care provider, no matter what they prescribe or what product they use."
Manisha Narasimhan, PhD, has been named president of Digital Health Services to lead the Orphia platform. She has worked at Bausch + Lomb for three years and brings nearly two decades of experience in biotechnology, strategy, and digital transformation, according to the company.
Bausch + Lomb said it plans to expand the platform's capabilities over time to support broader aspects of the patient journey, including care coordination and practice workflow. The company is headquartered in Vaughan, Ontario, with the Hippocratic AI engagement based out of Menlo Park, California.
