Garmin launches AXIS flight display with built-in GPS, radio and audio

Garmin (NYSE: GRMN) announced a new family of flight displays called AXIS, which combines a flight display, IFR GPS, NAV/COMM radio and audio panel into a single unit, according to a company press release.

The AXIS lineup is designed for certified piston-powered single and twin engine aircraft, as well as experimental and light sport aircraft. Garmin said the system will be covered by a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) from the FAA spanning hundreds of Part 23 Class I/II aircraft models, with approvals from other civil aviation authorities expected in the future.

Three display sizes are offered: an 11.6-inch landscape model and two 8-inch variants in portrait and landscape configurations. Each display can function as a primary flight display or multi-function display and supports touchscreen input as well as physical controls.

The 11.6-inch display is optionally available with a built-in TSO-certified IFR GPS, VHF COMM radio with 10 watts of transmit power and 8.33 kHz frequency tuning, NAV radio and a four-place intercom audio panel with Bluetooth. The 11.6-inch displays have received FAA and EASA Technical Standard Order certification and are scheduled to be available in July 2026. The 8-inch displays are expected to be available in early 2027.

AXIS includes built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a USB-C port supporting up to 27W charging and data transfer, and an HDMI video input on each display. The system is compatible with Garmin's existing G3X Touch sensors and components, including the same panel cutouts and mounting points.

Safety features include a dedicated emergency button on the display bezel, Smart Glide engine-failure assistance, Runway Occupancy Awareness and optional SurfaceWatch runway monitoring technology.

Carl Wolf, Garmin Vice President Aviation Sales, Marketing, Programs & Support, said the system "significantly reduces time, complexity and cost of installation through integration of navigation, communication and audio functions into a single flight display."
