GE HealthCare and Mayo Clinic launch prostate cancer theranostics study

GE HealthCare (NASDAQ: GEHC) and Mayo Clinic have announced a research collaboration called MI-BET (Molecular Imaging Biomarker-Based End of Therapy Trial), a study designed to explore a personalized approach to radioligand therapy (RLT) for patients with advanced prostate cancer.

The collaboration stems from a 2023 Strategic Radiology Research Alliance between the two organizations. The study will be based at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

Current RLT practice typically follows a standardized, preset number of treatment cycles. The MI-BET study is designed to evaluate whether imaging- and biomarker-informed data can support individualized treatment decisions, including whether a pause in therapy is warranted based on a patient's disease response over time.

The study will use GE HealthCare's StarGuide SPECT/CT technology alongside MIM Software's MIM LesionID Pro to track tumor response throughout treatment. The research team will integrate imaging data with clinical outcomes and blood-based biomarkers to explore potential predictive markers for patient response.

Mayo Clinic is also the first U.S. site to investigate GE HealthCare's next-generation StarGuide GX SPECT/CT technology, which is CE marked but not approved or cleared by the FDA and not available for sale in the United States.

"Personalizing therapy is both a scientific pursuit and an opportunity to expand patient access," said Geoffrey Johnson, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Radiopharmaceutical Trial Team at Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center. "By evaluating response earlier in their treatment, we can generate data to drive approaches that could help reduce unnecessary therapy while expanding access to care for wider populations."

The study is designed to encourage broad patient participation through outreach, collaboration with community and advocacy organizations, and the use of telemedicine to reduce barriers to enrollment, according to a press release from the companies.
