Sunrun launches pilot to run AI compute nodes in customer homes

July 8, 2026 8:01 AM EDT

Sunrun (NASDAQ: RUN) has launched a pilot program to place distributed AI compute nodes in homes equipped with its solar and battery storage systems, the company announced July 8, 2026.

The pilot follows a proof of concept that the company said demonstrated revenue generation and demand for distributed compute. Sunrun is coordinating the sale of AI inference capacity to enterprise buyers while testing the nodes under various conditions and rate structures. Homeowners who participate receive compensation for hosting the compute hardware.

"AI companies are scrambling to secure greater access to energy and computing power," said Sunrun President and Chief Revenue Officer Paul Dickson. "We are now using our leadership position in distributed home energy and proven infrastructure to bring compute closer to the sources of energy and inference."

The company said it plans to expand the pilot across multiple customer homes and assess results against defined milestones, compute performance, and homeowner experience before deciding on the scope and pace of a broader rollout. Sunrun said it is in discussions with enterprise compute buyers, homebuilders, and utility partners to structure commercial and deployment frameworks for potential expansion.

Sunrun has more than 1.1 million existing customers, which the company describes as its addressable deployment base for compute nodes. The compute nodes are paired with onsite battery systems, allowing data processing to continue through certain grid outages.

The distributed compute pilot is separate from Sunrun's previously announced agreement with Renew Home and Tesla to aggregate more than 16 gigawatts of flexible home energy capacity for hyperscalers and utilities.

Sunrun expects to complete the pilot over the coming months. The information in this article is based on a statement from the company.
