DOE selects Core Natural Resources unit for critical minerals grant

CONSOL Innovations LLC, a subsidiary of Core Natural Resources (NYSE: CNR), has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy for a multi-million-dollar grant to extract rare earth elements and critical materials from coal waste tailings.

The grant falls under the DOE's Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation funding opportunity titled "Mines & Metals Capacity Expansion – Piloting Byproduct Critical Minerals and Materials Recovery at Domestic Industrial Facilities." The award remains contingent on completion of negotiations between the company and the DOE, and the final grant amount has not yet been determined.

Core Natural Resources plans to use the funding to develop a pilot-scale facility for rare earth element and critical material extraction from coal waste tailings sourced from its Pennsylvania Mining Complex.

"We look forward to partnering with the Department of Energy as we take the next steps in exploring rare earth element and critical mineral extraction at our operations," said Jimmy Brock, Core's chairman and CEO.

Dan Connell, president of Core's Innovations business unit, said the team is focused on "understanding the opportunities for critical materials recovery from our mining byproducts."

The announcement follows a separate development earlier this year in which Northrop Grumman identified Core's Touchstone Advanced Composites group as a tooling and components supplier for its YFQ-48A Talon Blue Collaborative Combat Aircraft program.
