SpaceX offers half-price Starlink in Memphis amid data center backlash

Investing.com -- SpaceX announced discounted Starlink internet service in Memphis, Tennessee, offering plans at half the regular monthly cost as the company faces opposition over its data center operations in the area.

Customers who sign up will pay between $27.50 and $65 per month for Starlink service, down from the standard $55 to $130 monthly rates. The discount can be shared with friends and family, and new users will not face upfront hardware costs, according to a company statement.

SpaceX acquired xAI earlier this year, which runs data centers in Memphis and Southaven, Mississippi. The company has encountered community and environmental opposition over pollution from its data centers. SpaceX operates the Colossus site in Tennessee using gas turbines.

The U.S. Department of Justice recently defended xAI in a lawsuit filed by the NAACP that alleged pollution violations by the company.

The company agreed to resume construction on a recycled wastewater plant in Memphis, according to a post by the city's mayor. Work on the facility began in late 2025 but was subsequently delayed. The plant will process wastewater for use by SpaceX's Colossus facilities and the Tennessee Valley Authority, the local electric utility.
