Keysight and WIN Semiconductors launch joint GaN MMIC design workflow

Keysight Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: KEYS) and WIN Semiconductors Corp. have announced a joint monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) design workflow aimed at reducing fabrication risk for GaN MMIC design houses, according to a press release from the companies.

The workflow connects on-chip multi-domain simulation, 3D layout with verification, and off-chip MMIC evaluation board design into a single environment. It is intended to support companies developing GaN MMICs for 5G base stations, Wi-Fi access points, satellite payloads, and defense radar systems.

WIN Semiconductors' NP 120P GaN Process Design Kit (PDK) provides MMIC designers with process models and layout rules. These models operate within Keysight's Advanced Design System (ADS) and RF Circuit Simulation Professional software to automate the workflow toward first-pass MMIC tapeout.

The workflow automates simulation, optimization, and verification steps required before a design is submitted to a foundry for fabrication. It also allows engineers to design and optimize on-chip and off-chip components together prior to physical evaluation.

Richard Kuo, Director of Design Service at WIN Semiconductors, said the collaboration delivered "a customized LVS solution within the WIN ADS PDK," combining Keysight's ADS expertise with WIN's PDK and process technology to streamline the design flow.

Nilesh Kamdar, General Manager of EDA and Design Engineering Software at Keysight, said the combined tools give designers "a single path from chip design through evaluation board," allowing design houses to verify full system performance before fabrication.

The global GaN RF device market is projected to reach $2.77 billion by 2031, according to data cited in the press release from Mordor Intelligence.
