Sensata launches dual-trigger high-voltage fuse for EVs

Sensata Technologies (NYSE: ST) has launched the Active + Passive PyroFuse, a high-voltage circuit protection device that combines system-triggered and current-driven interruption in a single unit, according to a company press release.

The device, designated the STPS500P Series, is aimed at electric vehicles, commercial transportation, charging infrastructure, and industrial electrification systems. It integrates a signal-triggered pyrotechnic mechanism with a mechanically driven, current-based passive trigger, providing two independent interruption paths within one component.

Unlike passive protection devices that rely on thermal melting elements, the new unit responds directly to electrical current conditions, enabling millisecond-level fault interruption regardless of current level. The dual-trigger design is intended to maintain circuit interruption capability even when upstream sensors or control signals are unavailable.

Sensata says the faster interruption speed can reduce peak energy exposure during fault events and lower short-circuit demands on contactors, which may allow OEMs to reduce component sizing across high-voltage architectures.

"EV manufacturers have long been forced to work around the limitations of active-only or passive-only protection," said Markus Schwabe, Executive Vice President of Automotive at Sensata Technologies. "Our Active + Passive PyroFuse removes that tradeoff and helps our customers design safer, more resilient systems with less complexity."

The product is positioned as an addition to Sensata's existing portfolio of high-voltage contactors, sensing components, and electrical protection technologies.
