Amcor teams with Kelpi to test seaweed-based fiber packaging coatings
Amcor (NYSE: AMCR, ASX: AMC) has announced a collaboration with U.K.-based startup Kelpi to evaluate bio-based coating technologies for fiber packaging, according to a press release issued June 29, 2026.
Amcor's research and development teams are assessing Kelpi's proprietary coating platform, which uses seaweed-derived materials intended to provide barrier performance and compatibility with paper recycling streams. The evaluation is aimed at expanding options within Amcor's AmFiber™ fiber-based solutions platform.
The companies said potential benefits of the bio-based coatings include reduced reliance on fossil fuel-derived feedstocks and greater use of renewable resources. No commercial agreements or product launches were announced.
Peter Ettridge, Director of Research and Development for AmFiber™ at Amcor, cited the technology's combination of "processability, gas and moisture barrier performance, and paper recyclability" in a statement.
Frank Lehmann, Vice President of Corporate Venturing and Open Innovation at Amcor, said the partnership is part of how the company brings new technologies into its innovation ecosystem, adding that the goal is to explore opportunities to scale the technology within Amcor's global packaging portfolio.
Amcor operates more than 400 locations across more than 40 countries and reported approximately $23 billion in annualized sales.
