Palantir surges 4% on Nvidia sovereign AI pact as software beats semis

June 29, 2026 10:49 AM EDT

Investing.com -- Palantir Technologies Inc (NASDAQ: PLTR) is trading up 4.6% at $118.09 on Monday, extending a rebound that began Friday when the stock snapped a seven-session losing streak, after the company announced a strategic initiative with NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) to deploy open AI models inside classified and air-gapped government environments. The partnership pertains to a jointly developed intelligent engine pairing Nvidia's Blackwell Ultra GPUs and Nemotron open models with Palantir's AIP, Ontology, Foundry, and Apollo platforms, built for U.S. government agencies and critical infrastructure operators that cannot route sensitive data through commercial cloud providers.

Nvidia itself is trading relatively flat on the session, a divergence that underscores where investors are directing their AI enthusiasm right now: toward software names rather than the chip side of the trade. That rotation has been building since Friday, when the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (NYSE: IGV) and the State Street® SPDR® S&P® Software & Services ETF (NYSE: XSW) each rose nearly 4%, while the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ: SMH) fell roughly 4%, a spread that observers described as one of the strongest relative performances for software versus semiconductors this year.

The same can be said today, where the IGV and XSW are gaining 2.9% and 1.6%, respectively, while the SMH is up 0.1% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index is trading lower by 0.2%.

For Palantir, the timing matters. The stock had shed roughly 25% in June before Friday's bounce, weighed down by rising rate expectations, European contract headwinds including a potential loss of the UK NHS Federated Data Platform and France's reported shift toward domestic rival ChapsVision, and competition from Anthropic in enterprise AI procurement. The shares hit a 52-week low of $106.37 before recovering, and are now trading near a session high of $119.08, though they remain well off their 52-week peak of $207.52.

The Palantir-Nvidia architecture centers on data sovereignty: agencies can run large language models on their own hardware in on-premise or edge deployments under zero-trust security protocols, without sending proprietary data to third-party cloud infrastructure. CEO Alex Karp framed the security case directly: "Combining Palantir infrastructure with NVIDIA's AI and Nemotron models will allow the U.S. government to unleash the full power of LLMs while removing the underlying security risks and rational concerns around proprietary insights migrating into the weights of closed models."

Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang positioned the offering in broader geopolitical terms, saying that "open source AI is foundational to national security, public safety and U.S. technology leadership," and that the Nemotron-powered engine gives agencies "a secure, customizable and fully controlled foundation to build mission-critical AI systems in support of national security."

The two companies have been deepening their collaboration since at least October 2025, when they demonstrated an operational AI stack at Nvidia's GTC conference in Washington, and followed that with the "Chain Reaction" domestic AI infrastructure initiative in December 2025. Monday's announcement formalizes that relationship into a go-to-market product targeting the sovereign AI segment, though specific agency names and contract values have not been disclosed.

The next major test for the thesis arrives on August 10, 2026, when Palantir is scheduled to report second-quarter earnings. Analyst consensus heading into the quarter calls for EPS of $0.34 on revenue of approximately $1.81 billion, and all 19 analyst revisions over the past 90 days have been upward revisions, suggesting the sell-side was already constructive before today's partnership news. Investors will be watching whether management discusses the sovereign AI offering's contribution to pipeline or backlog on that call, and whether the Nvidia collaboration accelerates the pace of government contract wins that have underpinned Palantir's U.S. government revenue growth.
