German government aims to prevent Volkswagen plant closures

June 29, 2026 6:42 AM EDT

Investing.com -- The German government said Monday it aims to prevent domestic plant closures by Volkswagen, though the final decision rests with the company.

"Our aim is to prevent the closure of sites in Germany," a government spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said the government must establish proper framework conditions to keep the plants operational, including necessary competitive mechanisms.

"Incentives must be provided to ensure that these sites remain profitable," he said.

The spokesperson added that companies ultimately make such decisions based on commercial grounds.

"In principle, however, it is always up to the companies to make these decisions on commercial grounds," the spokesperson said.
