Vishay launches automotive optocoupler for 800 V EV batteries

Vishay Intertechnology (NYSE: VSH) introduced a new automotive-grade phototransistor optocoupler, the VOLA617A, designed for signal transmission with high galvanic isolation in electric vehicles and industrial automation systems, according to a company statement.
The device offers an isolation voltage of 5000 VRMS, a VIORM of 1414 Vpeak, and a VIOTM of 8000 Vpeak, housed in a 4-pin LSOP low-profile package. Vishay said the component can isolate DC voltages up to 1000 V, enabling use in 800 V EV battery architectures, whereas most automotive optocouplers are limited to platforms below 500 V.
Target applications include grid-connected on-board chargers, DC/DC converters, battery management systems, and isolated wake-up signals. The VOLA617A features creepage and clearance distances of 8 mm or greater, a collector-emitter voltage rating of 80 V, and is available in four current transfer ratio ranges.
The device operates across a temperature range of -40 °C to +125 °C, with a junction temperature capability of up to +145 °C. It provides coupling capacitance of 0.5 pF and meets dual AEC-Q102 qualification standards. The component is also RoHS-compliant and halogen-free.
Samples and production quantities are available, with lead times of eight weeks.
