Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) launched new capabilities for its SmartMDU product on the Calix One platform, targeting service providers that manage connectivity in multi-dwelling unit (MDU) properties such as apartment buildings.
The new features include role-based network management controls through the PropertyWorx portal, which limits property staff access to systems relevant to their roles. Service providers and property staff can now suspend resident Wi-Fi access to enforce payment and policy compliance. The update also adds QR code-based self-service activation, allowing residents to set up Wi-Fi at move-in without staff assistance. Calix is also extending its HomeOfficeIQ product to SmartMDU, which includes cellular network failover to maintain connectivity during outages.
According to research from Parks Associates cited in the press release, 77% of renters say they would pay higher rent when high-speed internet is included. Separately, roughly one-third of U.S. households live in MDUs, and renters account for 80% of overall household growth, according to figures cited from Broadband Breakfast and Arbor.
The press release states that Blue Stream Fiber achieved a near-perfect resident satisfaction rating within 30 days of deploying SmartMDU, and that Zentro reduced property issue resolution time by 30%.
Valerie Dodd, executive director at NextLight, said: "SmartMDU streamlines day-to-day operations for property management on a single platform while giving residents fast, reliable, move-in-ready connectivity they can control from the moment they move in."
Shane Eleniak, chief product officer at Calix, said: "With SmartMDU on the AI-native Calix One platform, providers can simplify operations, strengthen relationships with property owners, and deliver differentiated experiences that help increase property value and reduce resident turnover."
Calix states it serves more than 1,200 customers and that the Calix One platform has been developed over 15 years at a total investment of more than $2 billion.
