Sony Semiconductor Solutions unveils 64MP mobile image sensor
Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation announced the upcoming release of the LYTIA 610, a 1/2-type approximately 64-megapixel stacked CMOS image sensor for mobile devices, with mass-production shipments scheduled for the end of June 2026.
The sensor features what Sony claims is the industry's first RB2×2 On Chip Lens (OCL) pixel structure to reach mass production, according to the company's own research as of the announcement date. The structure combines a 1×1 OCL arrangement on green pixels for resolution and a 2×2 OCL arrangement on red and blue pixels for autofocus phase detection.
Sony says the design, paired with a dedicated remosaicing algorithm, delivers more than 20% improvement in spatial resolution compared to its LYTIA 601 sensor, which shares the same 0.7 µm pixel size but uses a conventional 2×2 OCL construction.
The LYTIA 610 also supports 4K video at 120 frames per second, which Sony states is a first for its 1/2-type sensor lineup. The company attributes the capability to a redesigned AD converter with increased parallelization, achieving double the readout speed of its previous 1/2-type sensor. The sensor also supports 4K 60 fps HDR video recording.
At full resolution of 64 megapixels in 4:3 format, the sensor operates at 24 fps. At 16 megapixels in 4:3 format, it supports 60 fps or 30 fps in HDR mode. The output interface supports MIPI C-PHY at up to 4.5 Gsps per trio and MIPI D-PHY at up to 2.5 Gbps per lane.
