Rubio says Iran cannot charge tolls in Strait of Hormuz

June 23, 2026 12:17 PM EDT

Investing.com -- U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated today that Iran will not be permitted to impose tolls in the Strait of Hormuz under any future agreement with the United States. Rubio said such an arrangement would violate international law.

"No country is allowed to charge tolls or fees on an international waterway, that's existing international law," Rubio said.

The Secretary of State also addressed regional security concerns, saying the U.S. plans to engage directly with the Lebanese government. Rubio noted that ending hostilities in the region remains difficult while Iranian proxies continue launching missiles.

Rubio indicated the matter will be addressed at an appropriate time.
