United Airlines flies first Starlink-equipped widebody on transatlantic route

United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAL) operated its first transatlantic widebody flight equipped with Starlink Wi-Fi on June 22, with flight 14 departing Newark/New York for London aboard a Boeing 777-200.

The flight marks the beginning of a broader rollout, with nearly 60 United widebody aircraft expected to receive Starlink installations by the end of 2025, and the entire widebody fleet expected to be outfitted by next summer. Routes on Starlink-enabled 777-200 aircraft will include flights between United's hub airports in Newark/New York, Washington D.C., Houston, and San Francisco and international destinations including London, Frankfurt, Zurich, Paris, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, and Tokyo.

United currently has more than 400 Starlink-equipped aircraft and expects to reach close to 1,000 before year-end. Since launching Starlink last spring, the airline said it has carried more than 18.6 million passengers on Starlink-equipped aircraft across more than 311,000 flights, connecting 9.9 million devices.

Starlink Wi-Fi is available at no charge to United MileagePlus members. The service uses low-Earth orbit satellites to provide connectivity over oceans, polar regions, and other areas not served by traditional cellular or Wi-Fi signals.

"Starlink offers the same fast, reliable internet access and connectivity we're all used to at home, delivered in the air at 35,000 feet, flying anywhere around the world," said David Kinzelman, United's Chief Customer Officer.

United also has more than 167,000 seatback screens across nearly 900 planes and plans to approximately double that number as it takes delivery of new aircraft and retrofits existing ones.
