WeRide partners with Geely Farizon and Kwoon Chung on right-hand-drive robotaxi

WeRide (NASDAQ: WRD) announced a three-way partnership with Geely Farizon New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group and Kwoon Chung Bus Holdings Limited to jointly develop robotaxis designed for right-hand-drive markets, with Hong Kong as the initial deployment location.

The announcement was made at the 2026 International Automotive & Supply Chain Expo in Hong Kong. The right-hand-drive robotaxi will be built on the existing GXR platform, which WeRide and Geely Farizon previously co-launched in October 2024. The vehicle is designed to meet local regulations, road conditions, and operational requirements in right-hand-drive markets.

According to a company press release, WeRide plans to expand the robotaxi fleet to 2,600 vehicles by the end of 2026 and scale to tens of thousands by 2030. The company said it intends to use Hong Kong as a base for potential entry into other right-hand-drive markets, including Singapore, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Australia.

The Robotaxi GXR has achieved fully driverless commercial operations in four cities: Guangzhou, Beijing, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. WeRide states its autonomous vehicles have been deployed in over 40 cities across 12 countries.

"Globalization has always been central to WeRide's strategy," said Dr. Tony Han, Founder and CEO of WeRide. "It represents an important breakthrough for autonomous driving in dense, complex urban environments worldwide and will help unlock broader opportunities in global right-hand-drive markets."

Matthew Wong, Chairman of Kwoon Chung Bus Holdings, cited driver shortages and rising fuel costs as factors behind the company's decision to pursue autonomous and energy-efficient technologies.

WeRide and Geely Farizon signed an upgraded cooperation agreement in March 2026 covering an enhanced version of the purpose-built GXR robotaxi.
