Snap shares rise after new AR glasses announcement

Investing.com -- Snap Inc. shares climbed more than 3% on Tuesday after the company unveiled SPECS, a new pair of standalone augmented reality glasses at Augmented World Expo 2026.

The glasses are now available for pre-order at $2,195 with a $200 refundable deposit and are expected to ship this fall in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.

SPECS operate without an external processing unit or tether. Snap offers two sizes: a 47 mm model weighing 132 grams and a 52 mm model weighing 136 grams. Both models are made from Swiss TR90 polymer and support removable prescription inserts.

The display uses Snap's proprietary liquid crystal on silicon technology, providing a 51-degree field of view and 16 million colors. The company said the visual experience is comparable to a 24-inch desktop monitor for work or a 115-inch screen for video playback. Electrochromic lenses shift from clear to tinted in 10 seconds.

Two Qualcomm Snapdragon processors power the device, with one dedicated to computer vision and one for running Lenses, Snap's term for augmented reality applications. Snap reports 7-millisecond motion-to-photon latency. Battery life reaches up to four hours of mixed use, with the included charging case providing four additional charges for a total of up to 20 hours.

Snap said it has filed more than 7,000 patents related to SPECS development and has shipped 10 Snap OS updates over the past year and a half, adding more than 40 features and APIs. Developers have published hundreds of Lenses compatible with the device.

The company also announced developer tools including a preview of an agentic development framework for building SPECS Lenses in Lens Studio. The framework works with AI coding tools including Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor.

Snap released the SPECS Spatial Benchmark to help developers evaluate how AI models handle spatial tasks. A Native Development Kit allows developers to bring C and C++ code directly into Lenses. Niantic Spatial is using the kit to bring its Visual Positioning System to SPECS, and Mapbox ported its Navigation Engine to the platform in under two hours.

A Commerce Kit will enable in-Lens purchases and subscriptions at launch. SPECS include an LED indicator that activates when recording is in progress.
