Silicon Labs tests 200-node Matter-over-Thread network at Boston office

June 16, 2026 10:01 AM EDT

Silicon Labs (NASDAQ: SLAB) announced the deployment and operation of a 200-node Matter-over-Thread validation network, according to a company press release. The network was tested at the company's Boston Connectivity Lab and office environment.

The announcement was made at the Connectivity Standards Alliance's inaugural Unify event. Silicon Labs described the network as among the largest publicly documented Matter-over-Thread performance test networks to date, though that claim was not independently verified.

The network operated under real-world wireless conditions, including active Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Thread traffic, without specialized topology engineering. Key reported results include 100% commissioning success using on-network commissioning, mean multicast latencies as low as 87 milliseconds, and less than 1% packet loss across most payload sizes.

"Matter is rapidly evolving from a smart home technology into a platform capable of supporting much larger deployments," said Daniel Cooley, Chief Technology Officer at Silicon Labs. "This work demonstrates not only that Matter-over-Thread can theoretically scale to thousands of devices, but also how Silicon Labs is helping customers deploy, manage and future-proof those networks."

The network was built using the OpenThread Border Router implementation. Silicon Labs also highlighted its Concurrent Multiprotocol technology, which it said enables devices to simultaneously support multiple wireless protocols, including both Zigbee and Matter-over-Thread, on a single radio. The company said this capability is supported across its MG26 and Series 3 device platforms.

Silicon Labs said the validation effort is intended to support device manufacturers deploying Matter-enabled products at commercial scale, including applications in smart buildings, multi-dwelling units and large IoT installations.
