Tate & Lyle expands sweetener collaboration with BioHarvest Sciences

Tate & Lyle PLC has expanded its collaboration with BioHarvest Sciences Inc. (NASDAQ: BHST) to develop multiple plant-based sweetener molecules, broadening their joint sweetener development program that began in 2024.

The expanded partnership aims to create sweetening solutions tailored to different food and beverage categories. The collaboration utilizes BioHarvest's Botanical Synthesis platform, which produces plant-based, non-GMO ingredients without traditional agricultural extraction methods.

Victoria Spadaro-Grant, Chief Science and Innovation Officer at Tate & Lyle, said the expansion reflects technical progress achieved and aims to expand their sweetening solutions toolkit. She noted that multiple unmet market needs are unlikely to be addressed with a single sweetener.

BioHarvest CEO Zaki Rakib stated the broadened program demonstrates confidence in their platform's versatility and progress made through the collaboration.

A 2025 Tate & Lyle survey across seven global markets found over half of respondents planned to reduce sugar consumption in the following 12 months, with strong consumer interest in sweeteners derived from fruits and plants.

Tate & Lyle trades on the London Stock Exchange under TATE.L, with American Depositary Receipts trading under TATYY. For the year ended March 31, 2025, on a pro forma basis including its CP Kelco acquisition, the company's revenue would have been £2.12 billion.

BioHarvest operates through direct-to-consumer business and a contract development and manufacturing organization division. The company's flagship product VINIA has generated nearly $100 million in cumulative sales.
