Calix Inc. (NYSE: CALX) announced it is extending its Calix One platform to support 50G-PON technology, enabling service providers to upgrade network capacity without rebuilding existing infrastructure.
The company said its AXOS E7-2 50G-PON line card will support multiple passive optical network standards including 50G-PON, XGS-PON, and GPON on a single network. The technology integrates with the existing AXOS operating system used by service providers.
Calix completed trials in North America with ALLO Communications and Brightspeed, according to the company statement. The 50G-PON solution includes a GigaPoint optical network terminal that supports various LAN interfaces including 10GE, 25GE, and 50GE.
The platform includes cloud-based management through Calix Operations Cloud, which provides network monitoring, health status updates, and maintenance alerts. The system is designed to support residential, business, and multi-dwelling unit markets.
"For CityFibre, 50G-PON isn't about headline speeds—it's about deepening the intelligence, capacity, and capability of the multi-service platform," said David Tomalin, group chief technology officer at CityFibre. The UK fiber provider has worked with Calix for over 10 years and previously upgraded its network from GPON to XGS-PON.
Shane Eleniak, chief product officer at Calix, said the platform enables operators to adapt network capabilities more quickly than traditional rebuild approaches.
The San Jose-based company serves more than 1,200 customers and has invested over $2 billion in platform development over 15 years, according to the press release.
