Lakewood-Amedex reports low resistance development in antimicrobial tests

Lakewood-Amedex Biotherapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: LABT) announced laboratory test results showing its lead compound Nu-3 demonstrated low potential for bacterial resistance development compared to existing antibiotics.

The company conducted serial passage studies over 21 days using E. coli and MRSA bacteria exposed to Nu-3. Results showed Nu-3 maintained similar effectiveness against both bacterial strains, with only slight increases in the minimum inhibitory concentration for E. coli and no change for MRSA.

In contrast, ciprofloxacin, used as a control in the same experiments, showed resistance increases of over 2,000-fold for E. coli and over 600-fold for MRSA. Nu-3 maintained its original effectiveness when tested against bacteria that had developed ciprofloxacin resistance.

Nu-3 belongs to a class of antimicrobial compounds called Bisphosphocins that the company developed for treating infected diabetic foot ulcers. The compounds work by destabilizing bacterial cell membranes within one minute of exposure, according to the company's laboratory studies.

"The AMR data support our understanding of the mechanism of the Bisphosphocin class of compounds, which we believe can provide a broad spectrum of activity against gram-positive, gram-negative, and multidrug-resistant organisms," said Kelvin Cooper, the company's chief executive officer.

The company is developing Nu-3 as a topical treatment for infected diabetic foot ulcers, a condition affecting approximately 15% to 20% of cases caused by resistant pathogens. The economic burden of diabetic foot ulcer complications was estimated at $80 billion in 2018 in the United States.

Lakewood-Amedex is also exploring Bisphosphocin compounds in preclinical studies for complicated urinary tract infections and pulmonary infections, according to the press release statement.
