Investing.com -- Intel Corp. has hired Samsung Electronics Co. executive Shawn Han to help attract customers to its outsourced chip manufacturing business.
Han, an executive vice president at Samsung, will join Intel next month as general manager of foundry services and report to Naga Chandrasekaran, head of the chipmaker's foundry division, according to a statement Thursday.
The move is part of Intel's turnaround plan under Chief Executive Officer Lip-Bu Tan to expand its foundry business, which makes chips for outside clients. The foundry market is currently dominated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., with Samsung as a distant second.
Intel seeks to persuade other chipmakers, many of whom are competitors, to become their manufacturer.
"The hire reflects Intel Foundry's continued emphasis on close customer engagement and customer-driven execution," Chandrasekaran said. "Shawn brings more than 10 years of commercial foundry leadership experience from his time at Samsung Foundry."
