Booz Allen Hamilton (NYSE: BAH) announced that its venture capital arm has invested in Portal Space Systems, a space technology company developing maneuverable spacecraft for orbital operations.
Portal Space Systems is creating two spacecraft platforms: Starburst, an orbital maneuvering vehicle for operations within a destination orbit, and Supernova, a transorbital spacecraft for movement across orbital regimes. Both vehicles are designed as multi-role platforms capable of supporting various payloads and missions.
The Supernova spacecraft uses Portal's proprietary solar thermal propulsion system for high-energy maneuvering across orbital regimes. The company's spacecraft enable repositioning, persistence, and dynamic response in orbit.
"Space is a critical domain for national and economic security, and maintaining advantage demands speed, agility, and resilience," said Eric Hoffman, senior vice president of space solutions at Booz Allen. "Portal's ability to enable rapid, dynamic maneuvering in orbit allows operators to reposition and respond in real time."
Jeff Thornburg, CEO of Portal Space Systems, stated, "Space is no longer a static domain, and our customers are operating in environments where speed and range directly determine mission outcomes."
The investment adds to Booz Allen Ventures' portfolio of space companies, which includes previous investments in Albedo, Quindar, and Starfish Space. Launched in 2022, Booz Allen Ventures focuses on early-stage startups in AI, defense tech, cybersecurity, space, and other sectors. The fund expanded to $300 million last year.
Booz Allen Hamilton employs approximately 31,600 people globally and reported revenue of $12.0 billion for the 12 months ended March 31, 2025, according to the press release.
